This engine was built in Ipswich and it pumped fresh water at a location somewhere in North Yorkshire and then stood idle for many years.

The Engine weighs in at 9ton and the Flywheel weighs 3ton, at 250rpm it will develope 125bhp, it is mounted on a 1979 Foden and the combined weight is + 20 ton. the Foden Lorry started life as a Snow Plough & Gritter for Monmouth County Council.

  • Bara en cylinder funkar!

  • Se den tillräckligt länge och den andra cylindern aktiveras.

  • What a wonderful engine - but next time please don't record it on your calculator!

  • @bored1980 I hadn't seen this film in a while so ran it through and found it to be as enjoyable as ever...seems to have matured with time!!!

  • The engine is cranked around by hand and needs to be in a particular position prior to the compressed air being released to start it.

I have seen it being started many times and the same procedure is always used. If I recall it's just over TDC before the compressed air is released into one of the cylinders which then cranks it over.

  • what a wonderful old machine it will run for years yet

  • @14omega28ok don't worry, huge flywheels have been designed and redesigned as much as it could!

  • Asides from the startup preparation, it seems to be quite easy to start :)

  • very similar to a fairbanks -morse

  • I'm 14 and really starting to become interested in this old technology lol If a lot of these old designs were thought about again they could be modernized to be more safe and more eco-friendly

  • One gallon of fuel per hour? Perhaps he should propel his rig with the 2 cylinder on the back deck, rather than the lump under the hood...er..."bonnet".

  • wow, I saw this engine today, 7th august 2011. I also put a video on you tube under the name m6jdb. Its not as good as this one though.

    Keep up the good work

  • @bored1980 I'd call this good quality. I saw many many videos that are much worse than this one (low FPS, high compression, bad sound, ...)
