No doubt those emotions play a role as well, and perhaps it's an argument about semantics and definitions, but nevertheless I've concluded that the root cause, the fundamental emotion...is "fear."

Frankly, I am getting nearly ready to pay for some good ideas... the proliferation of unedited videos of yahoos going on and on about nothing is really grating on my nerves. The fear vs. pack weight idea is very interesting and 100% on the mark in my opinion and experience.

You forgot to include the most important tip! Never ever buy anything from someone calling themselves and "expert". The size of the "experts" head is directly proportional to the amount of BS he is spouting. If you are new to backpacking take what you think you need close to home and you will soon discover what you don't. There are plenty of great guys and gals to learn from on here for free.
