Executives of Madison Square Garden, who own the Beacon Theater, welcomed the Allman Brothers back to the Beacon Theater for 2011's March run and apologized publicly for booking them somewhere else last year.
@boblackey1 I can understand that,I seen them back in 78 and they are not the same now, thats for sure,But I do like their sound. And knowing where that sound originated from makes it even better for me.I guess a little is better than none for me.And besides with what their is to choose from out there, this is far better.
@semiLivedj Maybe if I discovered the band and became a fan in 2002 rather than 1970 I would feel differently. It use to be difficult at times to enjoy the band for me with Duane and Berry being gone. Also I didn't care for the ABB in 1980,81&82 because Jaimoe was gone and they had Mike Lawer playing a crazy sounding piano. Todays version is better than that version with all due respect to Frankie Toler who died yesterday. I guess for an old fan like me having Duane, Berry AND Dickey out is it.
@semiLivedj Also the Jack/Dickey and the Derek/Dickey versions of the band were almost as good as the early Chuck/Larmar and Warren/Woody versions. Today's version has very good musicians and they often offer interesting versions of the old stuff. The new stuff usually leaves me cold and probably a big reason I just can't connect with the current version is Dickey being gone. He was there with Duane and his song writing was as important to the success of the band as Gregg's.
@semiLivedj I've been a fan since 1970 and saw the original band many times. To me NO version of the ABB equals the original!! To me the closest to the original was the first year or so Chuck Leavell and Larmar Williams were in the band but that version became jaded and lost what magic it had. Also another version that was close to the original was the Warren/Woody version of the early 90's. The band was almost as good as the original and they were doing some fine new songs.
@semiLivedj I didn't say they suck. They are all very good musicians. Take guitar solos for example. Which solos from Derek and Haynes tops what Dickey and Duane do on Liz Reed on Fillmore East or You Don't Love Me? Where is a blues solo from Haynes and D. Trucks that tops the one Betts does on Jelly, Jelly on Brothers and Sisters? Where is the song writing the equals Dreams, Whipping Post, Mellisa, Wasted Words, Blue Sky, Elizabeth Reed, Jessica, Southbound etc? Good now but great then is ABB.
@boblackey1 Well I'm 64 and I still work but have to take Advil to get up in the morning. Gregg and Jaimoe clearly don't have the energy they once did. Butch comes close. The younger guys are very good musicians and they more than hold their own on the old stuff. But the fact is, taken as a whole, the ABB today is not as good as the original band. Derek and Warren play some amazing solos but they aren't like the ABB solos you hear from Duane Allman & Dickey Betts on the Fillmore, Eat Peach discs
@boblackey1 Just the fact that you call them old worn out men tells me that you know nothing or very little about music,Its not football,So a real band to you is just kids?No thanks,I do not want to be in your cosmic prejudice zone. But you are entilted to your opinion,I just dont agree. They are not what they used to be,I agree to that, but they are still very good.Better that most in my opinion. But to say they suck because their not the same band is just very misinformed.
@semiLivedj The Allman Brothers back at the Beacon?? The current version of the Allman Brothers Band sounds like old worn out men playing with kids when you put it up against the way the original band sounded. Just listen to Live At Fillmore East, then listen to anything this band does and it is JUST NOT THERE!! Old men playing with kids rather than a real band that can play, swing and put you in the cosmic zone.
