'Border War' Shirts Pop Up Before Big Game

Some T-shirts being sold for next week's football game between the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri are stirring up a controversy.

The T-shirts reference some infamous events from the bloody border wars that led up to the Civil War.

One T-shirt being sold online by an MU fan shows the 1862 Quantrill raid on Lawrence by southern sympathizers from Missouri. The raiders burned the town and killed 150 people.

A Jayhawk T-shirt shows abolitionist John Brown, who killed at least five southern sympathizers.

None of the T-shirts are authorized by the athletic departments of MU or KU.

Some fans said the T-shirts go too far.

"As a Civil War historian, Quantrill's sacking of Lawrence is not something to be taken lightly," Elena Smith told KMBC's Micheal Mahoney.

"I think it's a little vindictive to be on a T-shirt," Jamie Simpson said.

"Some will get it, some others won't. I'll bet most fans don't know who John Brown is or what his claim to fame was," Darren Roubinek said.

The KU-MU game is Nov. 24 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
