This trail has suffered erosion during the last year or so, due both to heavy rains and increased traffic. Many of the nearly 300 "steps" (actually used to slow erosion) are missing and parts of the trail are slippery mud. The day of this hike, 24 Nov 2009, there was a large rope net full of equipment about 1 mile into the trail. It appears that the trail will be worked on very soon. But it's still a lovely hike.

  • Given our current weather you probably did slip and slide yesterday; hope you had a view.

I /think/ the driver of the car has to be a Hawai'i resident, probably to reduce the traffic through the gated community. You might also try Wiliwilinui (Google it), a parallel trail nearby, of similar difficulty. Thanks for the comment.

  • Thank you! "Lucky we live Hawaii"

  • Thank you! BTW, there is currently a lot of great work being done on this trail (I was there yesterday and just posted a video about the connector trail up from Niu Valley). Much of the trail repair in Hawaii is done by volunteers like the HTMC and Sierra Club (and others). Mahalo to them all.

  • Congratulations on what was probably a slippery hike. I hope you got a nice view after all that work. Thanks for your nice comments.

  • Thanks for your kind comment. It's still a lovely hike; I hope that you get to do it if you haven't yet.

  • Just did this hike for the 1st time. Excellent video. The erosion has taken a toll on the trail, but people have been taking good care of the trail and making it safer for visitors. I'm so grateful to have beautiful places like this to hike. Again much mahalos for the wonderful video =)

  • Very nice video. Thanks for taking time out of your life to post that. I enjoyed it very much. Aloha !
