Taking Sides on Family Planning

FHAʼs Family Planning Training Program for Men in Afghanistan

Afghan male doctors and nurses are asked to choose a side, agree or disagree, regarding whether or not it is appropriate for young married couples to use contraception. The trainees have an in-depth debate critiquing its advantages and disadvantages which includes cultural barriers and stigma.

This exercise is a part of a series of critical thinking exercises FHA uses in its training programs. It helps the trainees to share reasons and justification for their decisions.

Note that some men take an initial side that seemingly changes throughout the discussion.
