John William Waterhouse (6 April 1849 — 10 February 1917) was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter most famous for his paintings of female characters from mythology and literature. John William Waterhouse (6 de abril de 1849 10 de fevereiro de 1917) foi um pintor neo-clássico e Pré-rafaelita do Reino Unido, famoso por seus quadros representando personagens femininas da mitologia e da literatura.
Filho de artistas, as suas primeiras incursões na pintura foram influenciadas pelo neoclassicismo vitoriano, pelo pré-rafaelismo e mais tarde sentiu-se atraído pelos impressionistas franceses. Se no princípio da carreira se dedicou a temas da Antiguidade Clássica, mas tarde debruçou-se por temas literários, sempre com um estilo suave e misterioso, repleto de romancismo, que o permitem enquadrar no simbolismo.
O seu quadro mais famoso é The Lady of Shalott, um estudo Elaine de Astolat, Este quadro teve três versões: de 1888, 1896 e de 1916.
