If you have been lucky and never had hard times, I congratulate you luck. The genius who composed this song saw real hard times. For some, this song is a prayer, we pray that "hard times come again no more. Stephen was in bed unable to get up with a fever, he fell down and shattered a glass bedpan which cut his dead. He died three days later, he was 37. This song brings tears to my eyes and reminds me death and hard times will almost always come again. God Bless

This is a sublime Version. There is also a version en famille on Ken Burns' Songs of The Civil War Soundtrack. Anna put out Oddities, a Cd after our beloved Kate died in 2010. On it there are 3 Stephen Foster songs. I'm not Shilling just recommending. Midst the comments here, I read mean spirited small minded stuff.
