A group of gypsy musicians from Upper Egypt, the Musicians Of The Nile were first brought to the attention of a wider audience in 1975 when French musicologist Alain Weber brought them over to Europe initially to perform at the Chateauvallon Festival. Playing the folk music of the Arab gypsy community on traditional instruments, including the "rababah" (a spike fiddle with horse-hair strings), the "mizmar" (traditional Egyptian oboe) and the "tabl baladi' (double-membrane drum), the group toured throughout Europe and North America. In 1982 they performed at the first WOMAD Festival (partly funded by Peter Gabriel) and subsequently recorded two albums for Gabriel's Real World Records: Luxor To Isna and 1996"s Charcoal Gypsies. They also collaborated with Salamat on Salam Delta, contributed to Passion, Peter Gabriel's soundtrack to the film The Last Temptation Of Christ, and appeared in Latcho Dom, a film about gypsy music. Throughout all this they have retained their uncompromisingly raw and traditional sound, offering music fans in the West a rare opportunity to hear the little-known Arabic link in the chain of gypsy musical culture.

  • Thank you.

  • @MrOoppoddoo : I'm so happy that you liked it. Such beautiful music.

  • Fantastic! There are a lot of things I do not understand, and many things I do not agree with about the middle east, but I do love the music.

  • You're always sweet to comment. I love this music... it was my "walking" song for a while when I'd hike home after work.
