This central square is named after George III. It was laid out in 1781 in a design by famous architects James and Robert Adam. Becase the monarch was (a) slightly mad and (b) deemed responsible for loss of the American colonies which impacted negatively on Glasgow's prosperity, the stautue on the tall plinth in the midst of the square represents Sir Walter Scott as opposed to George III for whom it was originally intended.
