I have always been disappointed by my country in some way but always the vicarious nature of America manages to stun me.

That is why it is called a "donation". The idea is to give without expecting anything in return.
It is not a loan but a gift to another human in need.
That is the concept of "charity" and "good will".
People donate to St Judes Hospital, to cancer research, they donate blood, donate time to the red cross , and so on. People start their own fund raising ventures in order to pay medical bills and so forth. Yes, people will donate if they are made aware of someone 's misery.

Your logic makes no sense at all. Haiti has done nothing for the world yet people donate, no matter how much empathy I lack people will still donate if I, for example, need a surgery or Ill die.
-
It's called " a lack of empathy for your fellow humans".
Some people develop "empathy" at a very young age , others do not.
I hope nothing bad ever happens to you, and that you never need any help from anyone. Because , when and if you need that help , , others may not be willing to care to donate a cent or to pray for you, just as you do not care now.
Blessed it be.

Anderson Cooper deserves all our respect! He did not show the fallen close up but blurred their images, we do not need to sensationalize. Thank You Anderson for your respect to those that are no longer.

I am definitely not rich, but I donated two times for Haiti. I feel for the people. It could have been anyone of us down there if we were born Haitian.
