A pioneering socialist known nationally for introducing universal public health care to Canada, Tommy Douglas led Saskatchewan over a 17-year period. The biography delves into Douglas' early fascination with eugenics, his record of public ownership and ultimate failure in his stated ambition to "put the flag of socialism on Parliament Hill" as founding leader of the federal New Democratic Party. Featuring lively and candid interviews with daughter and actress Shirley Douglas, former premier Allan Blakeney, and Douglas Fisher, one of the last surviving MPs of the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), the documentary marks the 65th anniversary of Douglas' election as premier.

  • because of this man, we have healthcare at no cost and by this we are living well. We are healthy, and very fortunate. Many people would die in this country if it wasn't for Tommy. I respect him and people should too.

  • thank u tommy douglas i will carry on ur fight for health care

  • in an attempt to force the CCF out of power. The CBC, which is supposed to be owned by the Canadian taxpayers, in the early years took every opportunity to reject messages from the CCF so they could not pass on announcements. In fact they still do so today, the mini-series Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story was broadcasted by the CBC and made lots of money on suddenly pulled the DVD's off the store shelves claiming historical inaccuracies this was after the DVD's had been banned in the USA!

  • It still amazes me after almost a quarter century after the death of T.C. Douglas that people who loathed him still do so after all these years. A quick list of accomplishments that if you sneezed you would have missed them and then the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng list of programs that failed. One must know that the dreams of the CCF came up against federally controlled institutions such as banking, foreclosed on numerous mortgages.....

  • Excellent post. Thanks!
