I like how you're trying so desperately to draw parallels between Kastle and Liszt. As composers, the difference between them is that LISZT WAS NOT THE ONLY PERSON THAT PERFORMED HIS COMPOSITIONS.
Meaning, they were actually worth a damn so that he amassed numerous students in his music and interpreters.
No one's bothered to transcribe anything Kastle's written, or to perform it, except Kastle himself.
So Kastle composing for his own amusement means nothing.
What an amazing performance! To come this far, especially with a physical disability, proves to all of us that anything, with practice and determination, is possible.
What an amazing accomplishment! I'm proud of this young, blind man who faced many negative adversities like many "holier-than'thou" naysayers out there!!! Let's hear your performance of the hungarian rhapsodies.
i think there is some mutual miscommunication and misunderstanding here. i believe what mike is trying to say is that the consummate musician has both great compositional and performance skill, two completely different things. and i agree with that. take joe hisaishi for example; a remarkable composer, pianist, and conductor.
but as far as good pianism by itself goes, technical and interpretive ability will take you a long way. compositional ability, lamentably, is absolutely irrelevant towards a successful career.
in this day and age, the compositional and performing aspects of musicianship have been effectively divorced from each other, all for the worse. just ask gould. or listen to his interview.
well I agree with you, but this mike character has a long history of bashing all pianists, claiming that no one can play true piano because of some nonsense that all the pianists cheat at the end of a certain Hungarian rhapsody by Liszt. Then he goes and says that only good pianists can compose and play music. As far as I am concerned anyone with the ability, skill, talent and raw emotion to captivate their audience is a great pianist, renowned pianists just do that well to audiences worldwide.
