I believe this track is off of their "Ghost in the Machine" album. When it came out, I remember thinking that the Police were experimenting with the keyboards that all the new-wavers were using. Or perhaps there is some Rush influence there.

Regardless, this tune is a bit of a challenge for a bass player. It is not that the tune has a million change-ups, but that verse riff is kinda strangely-timed.

I play a bit of tap in the middle to double the keyboard part. Totally optional. I also recorded this with a little flange to fit better with the mood of the tune...my Rick's throaty growl is a little harsh without it.

  • You are the consummate bass player, zodiak.

I really like the way you play, and that tone from your Rick is a delight.

  • Thanks, turntapzap. The Rick is a wonderful instrument, although far afield from the sound that most people think of when they think "bass". It has more mid-tone presence, which really allows it to talk...or in my case, babble.

  • I think Rush was listening more to The Police than the other way around.

  • Well, you are right, it is a matter of opinion. I just thought that the much more difficult bass line coupled with the use of keyboards, etc. was more of a departure for the Police at the time than it would be for Rush (who already had Moving Pictures out as well as many others). But I do not honestly know for sure...just how I imagine it going down.

  • how the fuck did sting play this at the same time as singing?

  • You like that Rick, dont you! Sounds great on the RUSH stuff especially. Youre one of the first bassist Ive seen on youtube that impressed me. You play songs, not solo crap. Working bands need bassists who drive songs, not who want to play solos all night long.

  • Why don't you stand up?

  • how did sting play it...sing it ...write it? That's what separates us aspiring musicians to those that make it. Plus a drummer who kicks ass and a guitarist who found great chord combinations.

  • @Benniboy93

He overdubbed the vocals in the studio - the bass was recorded seperately. Check out the live version(s) of the Song, Sting played a more "economic" bass line in concert situations.

  • OMG! What a player! Brilliant mate!

  • wo, i always rickenbackers sounding thin and crap, but you have a very nice sound

  • With his hands and mouth.

  • Excellent

  • You make that thing sing all on its own!

  • I got to 1:09 in your bass playing. Rick James,Motown.....etc. You could be an asset to music with your talents sir.
