Georg Böhm (1661 1733) Partita "Ach wie nichtig, ach wie flüchtig" Eight variations on a chorale tune. Böhm was the great North German baroque composer who's sphere of influence certainly included the young J.S. Bach. The chorale partita's are probably for harpsichord\clavichord although often also played on the organ. Recent research suggests that Böhm's partita's may have been written for private domestic devotional purposes, rather than for liturgical use. In either case, this is a wonderful set of variations.

The harpsichord used in the recording, is based on the instrument in a museum in Colmar France
by Ionnes Ruckers, built in 1624, with subsequent alterations by the french instrument builders to enlarge the compass of the instrument. This copy of that instrument was built by Kevin Fryer, San Francisco.

Technical note: I recorded the audio seperately from the video in order to acheive higher sound quality -- but the audio is slightly out of sync with video in variations 6 - 8. My fingers seem to anticipate the music by about 1/2 a beat! I guess I need to get a more sophistated editor if I want to combine separate video and audio tracks.

  • I love these variations. Thanks so much for posting them, hrpschrdman!

  • Thanks, they are my favorite of Bohm's partitas, although Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ is very good too.

  • Bravo, excellent!

  • Es fantástico¡ Suena genial.

  • I had heard the organ version. Thank you for this!

  • This is beautiful, just beautiful. For anyone who may not be familiar with the mechanics of the instrument, it is very, very difficult to play the harpsichord this sensitively. Simply marvelous; thank you for sharing.

  • I think its amazing that I'm the first to comment, great song. We just covered this in Music Theory this week, and I really liked it. Good job.
