_____Hymn at nightfall_____________________

Before the light of evening fades,
we pray O Lord of all;
That by your love we may be saved,
from every grievous fall.

Repel the terrors of the night,
and Satan's power of guile.
Impose a calm and restful sleep,
that nothing may defile.

Most Holy Father grant our prayer,
through Christ your only Son;
that in your Spirit we may live,
and praise you, ever One. Amen.

_____Scripture reading______________________

But you O Lord are among us, and your Holy Name is called upon by us; forsake us not O Lord our God.
Thanks be to God.

_____Responsory________________________

Guard us O Lord as the apple of your eye - beneath the shadow of your wings, protect us.

_____Canticle of Simeon___________________

Antiphon: Save us Lord while we are awake, protect us while we are asleep, that we may watch with Christ and rest peacefully.

┼ Now Lord, you have kept your word, let your servant go in peace;
With my own eyes I have seen the salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of every people.

A light to reveal you to the nations, and the glory of your people, Israel.

Glory be to the Father...

Antiphon: Save us Lord...

_____Short litany & Our Father_______________

Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.

Our Father...

_____Final prayer & blessing_________________

The Lord be with you - and also with you.

Let us pray.
Visit, we beseech you O Lord, this house and family,
and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy.
Let your holy angels dwell here that you may keep us in peace,
and let your blessing be always upon us.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit; one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord - thanks be to God.

May the Almighty and Merciful God; ┼ the Father, the Son & the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve you.
And our absent brethren. Amen.

_____Marian antiphon (Salve Regina)__________

Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae,
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
ad te clamamus exsules filii Evae,
ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia, ergo, advocata nostra,
illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte;
et Iesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.

Hail, Queen, mother merciful
Life, sweetness, and hope of ours, hail.
To thee we cry, exiles, children of Eve.
To thee we sigh, mourning and weeping
in this tearful valley.

Quick then, Advocate of ours,
those thy merciful eyes to us turn.
And Jesus, blessed fruit of womb thine,
unto us, after this exile show
O clement: O loving: O sweet Virgin Mary.

  • With Love and Light in us...Thankyou...

  • thank you so much-as an urban monk hoping to form a new cloistered community under the rule for hermits of Francis of Assisi, this is such a help and companion for Divine Office. God bless this mission of yours.

  • wow so sublime and peaceful at the same time....

  • Thanks! this is a great way to bring the Lord into my heart and mind before sleeping.

  • What more can I say,than what's already mentioned her?

    Wow! A Symphony of Angels!!

    To All those who are listening to this tantalising Chant; God Bless you.

  • My favourite Office of the day when I was on retreat there. It's a wonderful experience to share in the prayer and praise at Ampleforth. Don't miss going there if you ever have an opportunity. Blessings to all the monks as they continue the Benedictine traditions at this Abbey.

  • No need to be a believer to appreciate these chants. After one listens to this no one can doubt that there is something of Divine Nature in these chants....

  • The beauty of this liturgy goes beyond creed or denomination. This whole video and the work of our brother who posted it are an act of God > I remember the good old years I spent at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo California. Of course, I love how my brothers in the monastery worshio the Lord. Peace to all of those who listen to this Night Prayer.

  • Was this recorded when Basil Hume was abbot? Sounds awfully like his voice, speaking the opening and concluding prayers.

    Thank you so much for posting this, it brings the day to a peaceful and blessed close.
