This immense square is a famed Rome landmark. It features a central obelisk and twin churches. It gets its name from the 15th century church: Santa Maria del Popolo. Its current architecture is due to Giuseppe Valadier who designed it about 1820. It marks the northern entrance to the city where all roads converged. Since this was what visitors first saw of the city, it has been a special project Popes and architects for over 300 years. This is a gather place for all ages. On New Year's eve, Rome stages a mammoth party in the square.
