I don't mind hearing "chinks"/"chinamen"...sometime
s I get a feeling that it's just white guy's way of saying "smart people" =) In my university, people from HK /China outperform local people in every subjects.
Chinamen = men from china = the top people in Universities all over the world.

You are absolutely right, it should be pronounced as 'na D, he should learn how to speak his own language correctly,before he try to teach others English.

I am from HK. I do use "lee D". "nay D", "lay D" and "leeD" are all used in daily conversation. I think it's just habit.
