My thoughts on the 2009 Canadian horror movie Pontypool". Also, I feel that the video portion of my review was perhaps far too scattershot so below I shall summarize my thoughts in a more clear, concise manner..

"Pontypool" is a highly original "zombie" horror movie with a thought-provoking and frightening twist and though it is a very odd movie with just as many parts linguistic study as horror and quite offbeat what with twinges of Canadiana, black humor, and even film noir it should still appeal to both the mainstream and those looking for a movie with more meat on it. The method of disease ratchets up the tension a great deal and while the movie is slower-paced and more centrally-focused due to the smaller budget it should definitely be seen by any horror movie aficionado and perhaps even by those not overly fond of the genre because the acting still stands out amongst it's other intriguing parts, given their tastes, of course.

For those that want a serious, critical roundtable breakdown of the film and more to listen to then check out the link below, where I will link to a podcast that had a Bruce Mcdonald dedicated podcast:

  • whats interesting is that they live at the end....there is one more scene AFTER the credits all roll.

Ya, that was...interesting. I'm not entirely sure what it meant but until I can figure it out I'm chalking it up to directorial strangeness. It's not terribly uncommon, have you seen "Southland Tales"? XD

  • @phantomsdaydreams its a film about LANGUAGE...

  • @bradford71us No shit, Sherlock. That comment was not meant at the movie as a whole. It was meant only at the after credits bit. Congrats on mis-reading.

  • @phantomsdaydreams Richard Kelly xD he has very very puzzling scripts. donnie darko is harder to interpret then southland xP

  • I live in Pontypool! Its a really nice town. Besides the zombie of course XD

  • That was one of the more intelligent reviews I’ve read in awhile. I’ll defiantly check this movie out, but can you tell me your feelings on Midnight Movie? It looks pretty interesting, but I don’t know what to expect from it.

  • Please explain the ending to me, I don't get it. :P

  • This is a good review, but i have to point out you give away one of the biggest spoilers within the first few seconds! xD

I thought this was a really good film, in my opinion its incredibly underrated.

It was by no means perfect, but there are some scenes that great an amazing sense of fear and dread and confusion only by hearing what people are saying.

  • Pontypool is the best zombie movie I've ver seen. Movies do not need lots of action to be good, and they nailed it perfectly! It is definately definately the most ORIGINAL zombie movie out there!

  • great movie , great movie , great movie , great movie , great movie , crap what the hell is going on with me

  • the movie is not bad .but is kind of boring , the whole idea of the movie is great, but to just watch a guy sitting on his ass for almost 80 minutes is kind of a let down,i think they could use little scenes like 15 to 30 seconds long in between the radio calls with the reporter to show you what is going on outside......but they did a find job with a low budget
