Build a great lumber rack for your shop or garage with simple techniches that do not involve complex joinery or alot of precise cutting or joints. This is a great medium duty lumber rack that should hold pretty much whatever you want to put on it. The supports for my rack are spaced 32" apart but you could easily put them 16" apart and have a heavy duty lumber rack.

This rack really gave me some great, simple and easy lumber storage in my woodworking shop. It doesn't take up much space and I can still roll my mobile tools under it to get them out fo the way in my small shop.

  • Using too many screws on your vertical supports can split the 2x4 in the wall or the 2x2 you bolted on it.

The plywood braces should have had 3 screws on one side and 2 on the other again staggering them so they are not in the same location to prevent splitting. I am kind of concerned with the amount of wood that could be stored on these shelves it just might become overloaded and collapse.

  • @IH1940HAY I predrilled the holes for those screws that go into the wall in order to reduce splitting. I don't think the small screws through the sides are enough to cause any splitting. It has been about a year since I built the rack and it is holding the weight just fine, I have a decent amount of oak on it too. But I am conscious on how much I put on it not to overload it.

  • Nice job !! That has given me some ideas for my own garage, Thanks

  • @goatsears Thanks! Your very welcome, I like it because it's cheap! Also, building shop stuff yourself is more unique than buying it.....

  • Good video, but instead of taking 8" squares and cutting off a 4-1/2" triangle (and wasting it), why not have an 8" x 11-1/2" rectable and cut the diagonal in the middle to create two even pieces (and no waste)?

Also, without pre-drilling holes in the 2x2 on the wall, won't putting 6 screws into each support end up splitting the board?

  • @ArmchairHandyman You are right about the plywood and not wasting by cutting them that way. If I ever build another I will do it like that, thanks.

If you check the video around 3:30 you can see where I did predrill the holes in the 2x2 to prevent it from splitting. It has worked perfectly so far.
