KATAKAI fireworks 2007 3-shaku-dama

FIREWORKS IN KATAKAI
Records show the history of fireworks in Katakai goes back four hundred years.
It is now famous for its 3-shaku dama(36" shell)
fireworks (round fireworks with a circumference of about 90cms).
4-shaku dama (120cms) fireworks,which create an illumination 800 meters in diameter in the sky, have also been successfully set off from there and recorded in the Guiness Book of Records as the largest fireworks in the world.
Fireworks were originally votive offerings made to shrines by the people of Ojiya.
This tradition still continues with the giant fireworks carrying the prayers and dreams of the people into colorful explosion in the sky above Katakai every year.
