Kevin's Pov

I killed that last bottle too quick. I only have enough money for these to last a month and that was the ninth one in the last three weeks. Shit. Im all out. How the hell am I supposed to get through today without any scotch? I finally rolled out of bed. Guess I should probably get up and get shit done. Who am I kidding, I havent got shit to do, and Im out of scotch.

I'll just go to the liquor story and buy another bottle. Hannah's child support check can wait another month. Whats even the point of me paying it for her anyway? When do I even see the damn kids? She has a better job than I do. She probably blows it on shoe shopping anyway.

Where did I leave the car keys? I looked everywhere for them. My hangover is starting, better get to that liquor store quickly. Fuck it. I'll just walk there. I threw my jacket on and grabbed my credit card before walking out the front door.

I stumbled my way to the front door of Fast Freds Liquor. Jimmy was the lone owner of the store. His father, Fast Fred, passed away five or six years ago from lung cancer. Jimmy seemed to be heading down the same road.

"Hey Jim." I greeted. Most people in this neighbourhood don't care for cops, or pigs as they call them.

"Sup, man. Usual?" Jimmy replied.

Jimmy knew, like most people, how much I have grown to become just like the filth of the city. There was once a time, about seven mouths ago, that I wanted nothing more than to be the one glorified for singled-handedly cleaning the streets of the city. Those dreams are long since passed and faded. "Yeah, man. I answered as I plopped another bottle to the table."

"How you going to pay for it?" Jimmy asked. He could guess that a cops salary couldn't offered to buy nine forty dollar bottles in three weeks.

"This." I remarked as I pulled the miracle card out of my jean pockets. Jimmy swiped the card on the credit card pad and hesitated before giving it back. "I'm sorry, man. It was denied."

"What? That cant be right. Try it again."

"It wont change anything." Jimmy handed me back my card.

Damn. Denied. How pitiful Ive become to max out my credit card. "You know what, can you just hold on to this for me and I'll be right back. I have to go grab another card."

I arrived back at the liquor store about ten minutes later. There was somebody already at the counter so I waited my turn behind him. I couldnt help but over hear their conversation.

"You want the regular?" Jimmy asked.

"Jimmy, I hate taking money away from you like this." The guy said back to him.

"I know how that son of a bitch treats you. You deserve much better."

"Jimmy." He turned around with the paid for whiskey in his hands and stuffing a smaller bottle into his coat pocket.

"How old are you?" I couldn't help but ask as soon as his eyes met mine. He appeared to be no older than twelve. "Jimmy did you even card him?"

The kid froze. He looked up to Jimmy to say something in his defense. "Joe, why dont you show officer Tell your Id?"

He pulled out a state Id that read: Joseph Daniels, age 24. I stared him up and down. I was trying to match the picture on the Id with the boy in front of me. There was no way in hell this kid was twenty-four years old. Theres no way hes eighteen. "Well, Joseph. You have yourself a good day."

There was nothing else I could say. He looked similar to the picture, but I could tell it was fake. What else could I have done? For someone so young, I couldnt help but wonder for the rest of the day: why did he need so much alcohol?
