The Lockheed Georgia Company production video on the C-5A/B Galaxy and the Military Airlift Command (MAC). The video is titled, "Military Airlift Command, The Backbone of deterrence." This video was originally produced in 1983 about 14 years into the C-5 service with the U.S. Air Force. My dad was the among the first GE Tec Rep's assigned to the USAF's first airlift wing of C-5's, the 443rd MAW, located at Altus AFB, activated on Dec. 17, 1969. The C-5 was the first US Air Force heavy lifter cargo aircraft powered by turbofan engines, the GE TF-39 engine. The last C-5 departed Altus AFB on 7/27/2007. I used to go "visit" the flight line on the weekends with my dad where I was allowed pretty free access to the first 12 C-5's at Altus. Dad had the influence to allow me such access, and it also didnt hurt that the Base Commanding Offcers son was a good friend of mine either. This video includes rare footage of a C-5 Galaxy taxing in the dirt, a featured capability of the C-5 to enhance the C-5's service capability for the American Armed Forces. Also included is footage of aerial refueling with a KC-10 Extender. There was nothing like the whinning of the TF-39 turbofan engines during a takoff roll with a heavy load, it could be heard for quite some distance away, and when it passed overhead at the end of the runway, that's all you could hear. The C-5 Galaxy has been replaced by the C-17 Globemaster III heavy lift aircraft as the USAF premiere heavy lifter. The C-17 is another of my dad's aircraft and through the C-17 his contributions to our nations defense will continue for decades to come.

  • I racked up 6981.5 hours as a C-5 FE out at Travis. I got my money's worth, believe me!.

  • @IdolHans

    Thank you for your service.

  • actually the c 141 is being replaced by c 17 there is no way on heck that the c 17 is replacing the c5. why? thec5 isway larger in fact there still producing the c5 btw great vid

  • The last new airframe for the C-5 rolled off the assembly line in Apri 1989.

I believe you are including the C-5M (M for Modernization) which is an upgrade program to existing C-5's. Both are outstanding heavy lifters, each with unique capabilities.

  • c 5 i mean..

  • There are over 100 C-5's currently in service at about half dozen AFB's. The C-5 will continue to provide heavy lift capabilities to the USAF for some time to come.
