Want to feel like a local in Penang? Then you need to go shopping. Specifically, you need to go to Batu Ferringhi Night Market and spend hours rifling through a stretch of stalls of what some claim to be the longest Night Market in Southeast Asia. It's certainly a contender for the world's sweatiest and most disorientating, with hundreds of bargain-hunters crammed into an alleyway.
Alongside the mounds of second-hand Levis and no-brand cosmetics you'd expect to find in Southeast Asia's most frantic flea market, there's also a mass of traditional handicrafts, fine sarongs, triangular cushions, paper lamps, hill-tribe jewellery and shoulder bags are all excellent buys here.
But what makes Batu Ferringhi Night Market such a shopaholic's dream is its burgeoning community of young and old designers. The clothing zone is the obvious beacon, with its hundreds of mini-boutiques displaying super cute handbags.
