ANCHOR:
Four weeks have passed since Eutelsat's CEO Giuliano Berretta cut
NTD's broadcast into China via its W5 satellite. Our team in New
Zealand addresses the seriousness of this incident at a press
conference in the capital.
STORY:
NTD New Zealand held a press conference to further highlight the latest
evidence from Reporters without Borders, which proves that the shut down
was not purely a technical problem as claimed by Eutelsat, but
rather a deliberate decision by Mr Berretta to curry favor with the
Chinese Communist Party (CCP), to gain more business deals and to
satisfy Beijing's long-standing demand to take NTD down.
[Gina Shakespear, NTD New Zealand Spokesperson]:
"A regime that fears the freedom of speech is a weak regime. Any cooperation
seeking favor from such a regime sacrificing long term benefits for short term gains."
Eutelsat's actions violate its own company constitution as well
as the European conventions and charters that created Eutelsat.
[Gina Shakespear, NTD New Zealand Spokesperson]:
'Mr. Berretta actually had the option to not turn us off but violated that."
MP Keith Locke says this is not the first time that the CCP has censored certain media.
Other VIP's in New Zealand also condemn Eutelsat's suppression of NTD.
[Bernie Oglivy, Political Secretary of the Kiwi Party]:
"I think it's...it's terrible, I think it's a bullying tactic, China
thinks it's big, it can bully everybody, and I think well hey, get a
life China."
[Jia Jia, Chinese Defector]:
"I think Eutelsat is a criminal, it is persecuting Chinese people. It is cooperating with the
Chinese Communist regime to crack down on Chinese people."
We will continue to bring you coverage from around the world until
Eutelsat resumes NTD's broadcast.
NTD, Wellington, New Zealand.
