@KirstenR3d ALSO, his efforts with regards to the vaccinations we all receive, and some of which we don't really need to often such as mumps, measles and rubella, as well as hepatitis B (which he attributes as his greatest work in addition to research) saves millions of lives every year.

With the production of 40 or so vaccines, this man's done more for current medicinal treatments than any other.

Please be aware that they weren't injecting cancer into people, oncogenes (genes that cause cancer) are all in our DNA and are triggered to proliferate into tumors. Originally, vaccines were cultured in continuous human cell-lines (amorphous cell aggregates), but as time wore on they realised that it was dangerous due to the method they grew them in.

It so happens that Hilleman was one of the foremost people with regards to trying to find a vaccine for AIDS, spent his final years trying to.

It's just a morbid joke by Hilleman; he delivers a very dry joke that the AIDS virus, which is thought to have come into the US by way of Africa, and to have originated in monkeys or chimps or something, came into the US specifically via monkeys he used for testing. That is all, unfortunately.

So, when the others in the room break out in cackling laughter, it is because he just made a "very dirty joke," so to speak. Make sense?
