i think the problem is, that the automatic setting on his nikon d90 sets the exposure too fast, so that the important frames of the video, where the led is glowing, are missing

If you look @ 0:44, you can see that the camera not always correctly registers the lightning led.
@ 1:19 the right led is barely lit, so I think it is a miscapture by the camera. The one who is recording also states that they light up all three.
