Holy hell, I forgot he said coup de grace. But I somewhat agree with you, but I am convinced that Namco really didn't do much research on the French culture.
-
@OmgitzPeanut again, that is an expression used in english. hercule (mr. satan) says coup de grace (though badly pronounced) in dbz budokai. would hardly be considered evidence he's french.

Stacatto Crescendo

If you guys want to be technical each of the Latin based cultures around this time were very similar ie, Italy, Spain, France, and Portugal. The Italians have used the Spanish guitar, but it depends on the region the person lives in. Like the person before me said, Southern France is heavily Spanish influenced. Like Northern Italy is influenced heavily by France.

I love this theme :D I miss this Raphael. I've never really played him much, but I really liked the european flavour he brought to the game. Now he's all lame and vampiric, and there's no puss-in-boots archetype to bring a splash of Spanish-influenced French sass to the roster. :'(

@ApNw88 what French does he speak? You mean "en garde"? That wouldn't be impressive even if he wasn't a fencer! I don't think you understand this music doesn't have "some similarity", it's ultra-Spanish. It's like if you made "Sakura" the theme to a Chinese character. In-game I suppose it's clear he's meant to be French (since it's plainly stated as such), but in real life it's really confusing!
My guess is he's just meant to be snobby, hence the French / English / Spanish nobility mix.

@MonsieurMorelli Rouen is in Northern France. There are plenty of fair-skinned, blonde Spanish people. Google Fernando Torres. Plus he could be of mixed descent.
His overall style and this music of course, don't merely suggest Spain, they scream it.
It's possible that Raphael was born in Rouen but learned from Spainiards (like his teachers or something, or his parents.) But more likely is whoever designed him didn't know or care too much.

@IntuitionJo your crazy

A fencer, with his footwork and the way he holds his body and arms, reminds me somewhat of a flamenco dancer. Bailale al flamenco, swine!
Guys, I know why you're all confused. Raphael is French, but people all thing he's Spanish because he's BEYOND AWESOME. Discussion over.

Raphael is definitely French. This music which is played in "Southern France Mansion" (Raphael's Stage) sounds Spanish-like because the Southern France has been influenced by the Spanish culture, e.g. bullfighting in cities like Nîmes.
Moreover, Raphael does not look like being from Spain because of his complexion and his hair colour.^^
