The Chantels actually came together in the early 1950's led by Arlene Smith who took the lead on their first hit "Maybe" in late 1957 making The Chantels the 2nd all- girl group to hit in the rock and roll era (The Bobbettes had hit with "Mr. Lee" a few months earlier). Arlene left the group in 1959 for a solo career and Annette Smith (no relation) replaced her taking the lead on such songs as "Look In My Eyes" which went to #14 on the pop charts in September of 1961.
