This video shows how to secure and finish a cervical lock from the guard, as well as how to use the hold to sweep your opponent and finish the submission from the mount.

  • I did this submission by accident the other day. I locked up my friend's shoulder when I began to lose grip of my guillotine, and I saw an opportunity for the crank while I sweeping him. He tapped after I rolled him on his back :D

  • @Charkoly2 Well played!

  • I dont know if it is illegal on submission, but it should be. puts the well being of the fighter in extreme danger........

  • Thanks, good point. In terms of the sport side to this, most, if not all reputable tournaments, cervical locks and neck cranks are restricted. More precisely, this technique puts pressure on the cervical spine. There is a complex system of ligaments, tendons, and muscles to help support and stabilize this area, however undue torque could cause an injury. Just as with any submission, training partners should be aware of the dangers and take the necessary care.

  • isso é chave cervical e não crucifixo

  • My portuguese is limited, but I understand your comment to be that this is called a Cervical key and not a Crucifix. Thank you. That makes sense.

  • the way i do this technique is i grab it and automatically sweep to mount and pull the locked up shou;der to me whilst keeping my head down, thus making it legal because it is a shoulder lock and not cranking the neck at all..

  • kool

  • This technique can also be done from a single leg takedown.

  • @yankeefan369 I think the sweep aspect is called the 100% not the crank.

  • only illegal in tournaments if the ref knows what youre doing... sadly at most local bjj tournies the refs dont. Id agree when you say its only dangerous if you crank on it. Great sweep when you cant get the guillatine off. Either way, everyone needs to be aware of this technique.
