If she has all that food to fatten kids up, why not skip all the bloody effort of cooking and wrangling with inner guilt and just eat pies and cookies and whatnot. I'm just thinking out loud here people, there's no wrong answer really.

@theAlchemistfox Yes or, maybe the witch put a magic spell on the cage door that nobody would be able to open it except her. Probably Hansel must have tried sticking his hand out of the window to turn the knob to open the door but, the door stayed locked. So maybe once the witch died at the end, the spell was broken where Gretel was able to open the cage door.
