My method of breaking in a B17 with saddle soap. Better and cheaper than Proofide.

  • What rules? It's a bicycle seat. Why suffer for thousands of miles? I used local water soaking, soft pads and C-clamps to speed up the painful journey to complete comfort. You should be unaware that you are seated when wearing racing shorts. I have used Proofide and saddle oils without any obvious change during break-in. Excessive applications eventually softens the leather and the saddle sags into a hammock. This is considered bad. Why? Is it more comfortable? Yes. Tighten the nut? Why not?

  • HAHA dude your never supposed to use saddle soup at all on a brooks! Did you do any research at all before destroying your saddle?

Sure, folks use all sorts of stuff for initial break in: proofide, mink oil, neatsfoot oil, saddle soap, leather polish, etc... Seriously though, it's a bike seat that going to be sat on, sweat on, farted on, at the least... i think saddle soap (or any conditioner) is the least of a Brooks worry.
