Between the years 1845-1850 Ireland was subjected to one of the greatest catastrophes in its long and troubled history - The Great Famine. As one of the seminal events in Irish history, the Famine influenced the political, social and economic history of the country for generations. During this period Cork City witnessed scenes of horror and destitution which are barely imaginable to modern residents of the city. Cork County and City lost 150,000 to starvation. This is my tribute to them.
My great Grandfather left Fermanagh County, Ireland in 1846, at age 36,what great luck for him and his three brothers. He died 42 years later in Nebraska, leaving six sons and a daughter. The horrors of the Famine were too painful to relate.
