They were not shot because of their religion. The idiot wanted to shoot liberals from that church because he blamed some of the liberal programs that church supported for his unemployment and for the reduction of his food stamps. He shot up a pew of visitors. One of the people he shot was a Libertarian and most of the others were there to see the Libertarian's granddaughter in a play.
