Phonatic, I have reciently got a simula machine. you know like the edison machines that have model B, C reproducer etc. does columbia have different reproducers? can I play brown wax cylinders on the machine/reproducer in this video?
-
Hi,
I am not sure if you have the large mandrel to play the large concert cylinders, but Peter Dilg sells some 5" concert cylinders in reproduction. Originals are harder to find, and alot of them are broken.

I love this song! Nice machine! Where did you get it?

I bought this machine in Holland years ago. It was very reliable but most (wax) concert cylinders are shrunk today and won't fit on the mandrel properly. I sold it because it was too frustrating for me not to play the last inch of an old concert cylinder. It was definitely a problem with the records and not the mandrel. Even standard cylinders shrink but at a much lower ratio because of their smaller size. Thus, we normally don't pay attention to it as these usually still fit well enough.

Phonatic, in what year was recorded this Columbia cylinder?

I don't have an exact reference for these but the recording was surely made around 1908.
The phonograph dates from 1901.

Wow...that phonograph sounds grate. The speed is so steady' it sounds perfect. I have a Columbia Q that sounds nowhere as good as this
Thanks...

You can also make Q to sound nice and steady. The springs have been relubricated and I readjusted the governor which can be quite often the reason for constant speed problems.
