Jay Garbose videoed this pink Pyrostemma spinosum, a sea salp. It is a colony of chordates living together as one entity. Usually they are deepwater creatures but cold water upwellings bring them shallower. It is described by marine expert Connie Gasque as feeling as "soft as a feather boa"!

  • Jay, are you a little freaked out that someone's going to copy your vid? The continuous credit in the middle was a little obnoxious. Couldn't see the salp very well because of it.

  • ...actually I am after a few past experiences...

  • They are NOT related to Jellyfish. They are more closely related to vertrebates. They tend to come up to the surface to feed on plankton when it blooms. It is NOT rare, there is extreme amounts of these in the southern deeps seas around Antartica, but as I said the basicly go where plankton is plenty.

  • we must learn from these beings....

  • This looks like a pyrosome colony to me, not a salp colony.

  • lovely vid.

would have been nicer to watch without all the text though.

you should consider re-uploading without it

  • HOLY CHEESE!! I LOVE THESE GUYS! I'm talking about the salp, not the actual guys...
