Motorcyclist leads LAPD on a chase across the South Bay

A motorcyclist who led officers on an hour long chase from the Westside to the South Bay was in custody today after surrendering in South Los Angeles. Officers began chasing the man at National Boulevard and the Santa Monica (10) Freeway in the Palms District at 10:15 p.m. yesterday because he had a red rag obscuring his license plate, said Sgt. Andrew Chase of the Los Angeles Police Department's Pacific Station. ``They saw that and figured something was wrong,'' Chase said. During the chase the man ran red lights and occasionally drove the wrong way on surface streets and the San Diego (405) Freeway but mostly maintained a speed of around 55 mph because, he later said, ``he hadn't been riding in a while and didn't want to get hurt,'' Chase reported. The pursuit ended about 11:15 p.m. yesterday when the man pulled over at Figueroa and Manchester avenues and surrendered without further incident, Chase said. The man, whose name was not immediately released, will be booked on suspicion of felony evading, Chase said. Police this morning were investigating the reason the man fled from officers. ``He said he just wanted to go home,'' Chase said.
