  • What happened at the end? Did the son kill her mom or did she kill herself?

  • @laxlizzy Given the story context (and biographical information... see, for example, “Inside David Foster Wallace's Private Self-Help Library”), I think the implication is that the "suicide" of the title, literal or not, relates to the son. Also consider that The Brief Interviews stories cycle resolves with "B.I. #20," where the pathological male figure's suicide is strongly implied (and worse darkness besides)...it's not the same character, but certainly an extension of these themes.

  • When I reached the last line it was like I'd been punched in the gut. Devastating.

  • By far the scariest story I've ever read.

  • @laxlizzy sounds like he did, but it's only a story.....and with a cliched punchline. His depression must have been so tortuous for someone so intelligent. Interesting to hear his father give credit to the antidepressants. The brighter you are the harder it is to beat depression.Wonder what his thoughts on religion were? Bless him xx

  • Women who have self doubt, depression, any form of expectations, demanding outcomes, phobias, narcissistic emotions, etc., should not have children. They need to work on their emotional pain first and resolve it as much as possible. Nobody hurts another living being unless they have no conscience. No conscience can not be installed through the behavior of the mother. It can be aggravated, but not caused. What David Foster Wallace emphasizes is that suppressed emotions are even worse.
