Matt and I made another contact (QSO) with the ISS (International Space Station) amateur radio station NA1SS. We were standing alongside a rural road in just outside of Bend, Oregon using a Yaesu VX-8R handheld and a 2-meter 4-element Arrow Yagi antenna. We are going to try for future QSO attempts with NA1SS.

You know why I like your videos? Warts and all they go up. Trying to hit the ISS and fail? Who cares, its going up. Trying to hit the repeater or the youtube buddy on a far away mountain, and it doesn't work? It goes up. Trying out your VX8r for the first time and sounding better than the 5 year veteran? Well that goes up too. Based on your youtube name, you and I have extremely similar jobs and employers. Get your General, lets do a 2500 mile dx try.

Doc I was trying to make QSO from up here in Washington during the same pass. I'm fairly sure I caught him confirm Bend Oregon. My camera on my phone malfunctioned (user error) or I would have a video. Congrats on the QSO!

Dang you sound excited during that contact! I'm sure with the limited amount of time, and the heavy traffic they must get, I would be too!

Here are some helpfull things you might want to do when you work sattilites or the ISS.

Opening the squelch all the way definetly helps.

As the ISS goes by turn the antenna from vertical to horizontal to get the best signal, that will change the polarization because the ISS is not always vertical, it's moving so it's always changing position.

You could check out K7AGE's youtube video on working sattilites, it helped me quite a bit.
