i love sly and the family stone. such happy music.
i like to believe that music is more important than most of us give credit for.and that it can play a important part in our development and life style. perhaps if this wonderfull feeling incapsulated in slys music was crated more these days we would reunite more as a comunity.
In the 60's & 70's, music was very important in our development and lifestyle because artists like Sly, James, Stevie and others crafted music that spoke to us & for us and at the same time made us dance.
...And until today's music does that for me, Im'ma keep jammin' to the old school! :-)
Get a load of Sly's crushed velvet pants - fur boots, crocheted hat . . . lol. Love it. Funk was also about the clothes, and everyone was affected. I still have crocheted hats that my mom made for me in the 70s, from a magazine pattern, and I had the curly-goat trimmed suede maxi coat, platform boots . . never got any of the shiny stuff though. lol There was an inherent prejudice going on even then "you're not black enough to wear that . . " sort of thing. And I think the division started then
In order to have true funk music -- you have to have a composer with the rhythmic genius that Sly has. As one musician on "Make it Funky" says "Sly was the buck of rhythm . . . " and went on to say that the "things that went on in his head -- he could re-create on stage, every time."
Thank you so much for posting this. Sly and the gang tear it up! I miss this kind of acid soul so much. The set decor is too much, especially the animal skins. Looks like one of the guitarists almost slipped on the polar bear rug when they were dancing! Can't believe the audience was just sitting in their seats, but that's how it was...
