I unbox a new Western Digital My Book Essential 3TB External Hard drive. Found this at a B&M Costco near the LA area for $109.99 after instant rebate. Excellent deal considering the flooding situation in Thailand royally pwned hard drive production. Shortages are expected to run into Q1 2012 so pick up your drives now!

If you have no idea what happened in Thailand...

  • can i use one of these to to watch movies from it on my 40" tv using usb cable?

  • @deusauras Depends. Does your TV have an integrated media player? If you're unsure, then it probably doesn't and you'll need something like a WD TV Live.

  • Hi, I have the WD 1TB model, It works fine, asides from if I have it plugged into my pc then I turn it on. When I have it connected to my pc and try to boot up, the pc stays at the screen to allow you into your bios, but not further, I cannot press anything, so I have to turn the pc off using the power button, and unplug the hard drive, then reconnect when logged in....

How can I prevent this? :/

  • @3eneboy Try plugging it into a different USB port. I think your motherboard might be buggy.

  • What a coincidence, I bought the EXACT SAME drive today from Costco for $120ish. :P

  • @CamoY0shi costco ftw!

  • The drive sucks. i've had 2 and they both failed within 2weeks. Don't include software and no instructions. Great when it's actually recognised by Windows, to note it is also not recognised by Windows DiskManagement or 3rd party partition programmes unless you format it yourself which then ruins the drive.

  • Thanks for the unboxing. No-one mentions the size of the cable... but thanks to your high quality video, I was able to read the part number - 4064-705084-025, which is a 0.45m cable.

    Thanks for your help.

  • It's look like a xbox360

  • @KhanTutorials I have.

  • @3eneboy update ur bios.

  • @custompcreview I've tried this, I've also tried changing to boot order in the bios (suspecting that it may be trying to boot from the external?) but nothing has worked :/ It's just a bit of an inconvenience really :L
