Kenneth Roth discusses the current state of human rights in China. He argues that while the US may not be willing to challenge China due to economic interests, the future of Chinese stability rests on liberty issues like free speech.

-----

As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights celebrates its 60th anniversary, events in the Balkans, Sudan and Myanmar continue to challenge its idealism, while raising new questions about the prospects for humanitarian interventions.

Do human rights transcend national borders and customs? Is the definition of human rights changing?

Kenneth Roth is the executive director of Human Rights Watch, a post he has held since 1993. Human Rights Watch investigates, reports on, and seeks to curb human rights abuses in some 70 countries. From 1987 to 1993, Mr. Roth served as deputy director of the organization. Previously, he was a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the Iran-Contra investigation in Washington. He also worked in private practice as a litigator.

  • Optimism is not equivalent to naivety, just as cynicism is not equivalent to wisdom.

  • Tiananmen-->stable country, stable economy, fast growing cities, better lives for the people

No Tiananmen-->revolt, government overthrown, anarchy, civil war for decades on-end, no economic development, people lead shit lives.

  • Wait a minute

You're arguing that there is instability and people who are corrupt.....

So your solution is bringing in giving them rights to speak out, form unions and.... revolt? And that will bring peace in stability when they want to in-stabilize the government? Bring in corrupt people into the government?

Then why don't we let the US Tea party be in charge of the government.....

    Fat chance......

  • @FRTothus Americans? Only the blind patriots. Not all americans. Most americans are sick of what their government is pulling, and will criticise regardless of whether its the chinese government or their own.

Watch my videos, you'll know what I'm talking about. I do criticise it alot.

  • Try forming a labour union in Taiwan, minimum sentence 14 years in prison; or even in the US, where you can be fired with impugnity for attempting to organise. Not to mention most south American and Asian states. In fact I rather doubt that there are many people organising in the Middle East either. China is just one country among many and lowering worker costs is one of capitalism's main aims.
