I tried to do a video but it was too dark inside so I made a slideshow of the castle and organ in Death Valley, California. The organist is Tom Hazleton playing "At Sundown".

  • The only pipe organ in the music room is a Welte installed about 1931 with a separate roll player. The Johnsons hired Albert Hay Malotte to be the first organ concert. He wrote the famous setting of the Lord's Prayer.

  • I don't have a camcorder, just a digital still camera. I don't think there is a way to adjust the movie part. When I transferred the still pictures to a digital file the quality went way down. I think it's 15 ranks - Welte.

  • The tune is "At Sundown" by Walter Donaldson.

  • In the 1940s and '50s you COULD stay there but now it is only open for tours and all the rooms are carefully preserved with original furnishings. It is run by the state of Calif. as part of Death Valley National Monument. Look it up on Google and you will find web sites. There are two tours: one inside the castle and one underground. Take both. You can stay overnight in Stovepipe Wells, Furnace Creek or Beatty, Nevada. (Don't go in the summer!)

  • I had set the camera on "Email quality" pictures - sorry. There are two recordings available - Rex Koury on cassette tape and the Tom Hazleton recording - of the Scotty's Castle organ which is a Welte-Mignon of 14 ranks. The gift shop at the castle sells both.

  • What a lovely sounding instrument.

  • A wonderful REAL Pipe Organ in this one of the most desolate and isolated places on the face of the Earth! How marvelous!

  • The organ is a Welte 3/15.

  • Also one of the highlights of my 1979 visit to Death Valley & Scotty's Castle.

  • Beautiful song

  • Great to hear this organ again. This was the first pipe organ I ever played! One of the guides took pity on this wide-eyed kid.

  • It's a Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ that was custom made for the Castle's music room. I don't know how many ranks it has. I hope to visit there soon, and find out more. A wonderful Welte organ is also there.

  • FOCUS!

    Nice sound!

Learn how to manually adjust exposure setting on your camcorder.

    What organ?

    How many ranks?

Did you capture outside clock chime?

Thank you for posting this, randy.
