Max Raabe and The Palast Orchester
http://overturecenter.com/0809/1003maxraabe.htm

FRI, OCT 3, 8 PM
Overture Hall
Tickets: $25 - $49

The Weimar period in Germany between the two world wars was a dynamic time for the arts. If youve seen the musical Cabaret, then you have an idea of the heady atmosphere in the nightclubs and theaters of that era. Faultlessly fitting tuxedo, hair slicked back, a cheeky look and Max Raabe sings the best of an era with amusing nostalgia. Songs, hits and couplets. Cuban rumbas, cheerful foxtrots and elegant tangos. Songs of amazingly serious, amusing, yet melancholy simplicity.

Max Raabe and his orchestra capture the cosmopolitan feel of German cabaret in the 20s and 30s with precision, urgency and irony. Raabe, a baritone with an impressive vocal range, sparkles with his slick and witty delivery, and his 12-piece ensemble provides just the right backdrop. Following two completely sold-out solo concerts in the Neue Galerie on New Yorks elegant Upper East Side, long waiting lines along Fifth Avenue for one of the rare tickets for the additionally added concert; shortly thereafter an invitation came in to perform at the famous Carnegie Hall. Now they're coming to Madison for a memorable performance in Overture Hall.

In the grand style of performers from Germanys Weimar Republic, Max Raabe and his Palast Orchestra like to party like its 1929, writes the New York Times.

  • The articulation of Max Raabe singing in English shames most American singers by his better English elocution or pronunciation, which is appropriate in his tuxedo, refined style, subtle humor, whimsical charm, epitomizing the last Epoch of Art in our Culture, the 1920s-30s Art Deco period he revivifies here, after decades of excess of rock-headed roll out of show-offs' neurotic noise. Delightfully refreshing is Max Raabe and his truly entertaining, refined, amusing, Palast orchester of Berlin.
