The one thing that I find most regrettable is that the United States and Russia (USSR or Russian Federation) never became close allies. The fact that we had nuclear weapons is actually the one thing that prevented war from breaking out, though. Thank God, too, because at the height of the Cold War Russia just might have had enough troops to conquer Europe and keep Britain and the US from counter-invading. Numbers don't lie...

Russia's military is not even with the United States. Not yet at least. Currently they are using outdated technology and plan on modernizing their military due to our expansion of NATO into Eastern Europe.
Georgians got what was coming to them, its that simple. You give russia the slightest excuse, and they'll grind you into the ground

'An analysis of Russian and international law, as well as the review of how the peace enforcement operation was conducted by Russia in Georgia in August 2008, leads one to conclude that no international or domestic legal act can justify the Russian military invasion of the sovereign territory of the Republic of Georgia, or the recognition of the self-proclaimed independence of Georgian separatist regions by the Russian Federation.

It appears that these actions were conducted in violation of major international law principles and Russian national legislation. By siding with the separatists, Russia automatically became a party to the conflict and made it impossible for itself to be an arbiter or a peacekeeper in this conflict, thereby decreasing its role in future negotiations on the status of these provinces.'
