Well, actually Hopper went to see Manson in jail after the murders. He was suppose to play him in a movie that would depict Manson in a more positive light. Hopper knew Siebring as a firend and a drug dealer and was aware that the Tate murders were somehow related to drug business and not "Helter Skelter". He talks briefly about meeting Manson in American Dreamer. Also there's a book about the Manson case called The Manson File that reveals lot of the drug connections that led to the murders.
