A great R&B singer who's talents were overshadowed by the trouser splitting antics, great shame. Remember this being played at the Catacombs around 1971.

Thanks for the background on PJ. I remember watching him on Shindig and soon after hearing the DJ's in Seattle talking about the split pants. I figured that I had missed the actual incident, never realized they were talking about a different performance.

@wolfbaneseven Yes, PJ Proby performed on Shindig in '64-'65. The episodes are on youtube and he didn't wear leather pants on the show. The split (velvet) pants incidents occurred during a '65 Cilla Black tour of the UK that wasn't televised in the US. I didn't hear any DJ's talking about him then. Niki Hoeky charted in '67.
Jim Morrison was known for wearing leather. He caused an uproar when he was arrested for indecent exposure in '69 in Florida. He was given a posthumous pardon last month.

Shindig and Hullaballoo were TV shows in the mid sixties that featured pop music acts. PJ performed on one of them and experienced a wardrobe malfunction while doing a dance move. I believe the pants were leather but the radio DJ's here coined the term breakaway Levi's. Regardless, I still like the song after all these years.

@wolfbaneseven Your channel says you're in the U.S. I'm curious which national TV network it was you remember seeing PJ Proby live and what show it was. The Jack Good productions were taped for showing in the US and if he split his pants they edited it out because it wasn't shown. PJ Proby wasn't wearing Levi's either. If he'd been wearing Levi's splitting them would have been absolutely no accident! LOL
