by the way you conveniently overlooked this phrase - "Official English translation" of Authentic Text of Ukrainian Constitution, Clause 20 which reads

"The capital of Ukraine is the City of Kyiv" .....cheeers Kyivanite

.......you resist change maybe for other reasons........perhaps you prefer old communist way?.......in any case you are Kyivanite....and when it comes to legal documents requiring legal titles it will have Truzyb, Kyiv and your signature....if you attempt to change Kyiv to Kiev it will render the document void.....cheeers

The manner of transliterational spelling in the Constitution does matter more than your opinion which does not stand up to fact and you cannot bypass Ukrainian Govt - official changes mean agencies will eventually change and this is already happening at fast rate throughout the world

You have "basic right" to do whatever you want to your language, but you do not have the right to tell people in other countries how to write things in THEIR OWN LANGUAGE - meaning that you cannot tell English speakers how to write things in English. That is why Encyclopedia Britannica says Kiev and BBC News says Kiev.

The Constitution of Ukraine does not tell English speakers how to spell things. The line that you quoted earlier "The capital of Ukraine is the City of Kyiv" - article 20 Ukrainian constitution - is from a translation of the Constitution. On the bottom of the same text it says "The only authentic text is the text in the state language of Ukraine", because different translators can spell it differently - Kyiv, Kyyiv or Kiow (in Polish). In English it happens to be Kiev.

Kiev is but one of the many historic versions of the ancient spelling in English - It is generally accepted Kiev is modern Russian transliteration........... hence the need to adopt correct Kyiv based on1996 Ukrainian Transliteration System - in regards to other places you have cited - every democratic country can exercise its basic right to alter any aspect of its constitution.... if it so chooses.......cheeers Kyivanite......

If we follow your logic, you should demand that the Russians spell it Кыйив to follow phonetics. Meanwhile, the British people should be upset with Ukrainians and Russians for calling their capital Лондон instead of Ландон.

Why do Ukrainian nationalists always get so worked up over this issue? Why don't the people from Poland, Italy and the Czech Republic demand that their city names be spelled differently in English?

Kiev is not Russian. Киев is Russian. Kiev is the traditional historic spelling in English, it was used on English maps even before Ukraine became part of the Russian empire. There is a difference between phonetic transliteration (which is what proponents of Kyiv like yourself are trying to impose) and translation into English. Many world city names in English are not spelled phonetically: Moscow not Moskva, Prague not Praha, Warsaw not Warshava, Rome not Roma. I don't see them complaining.

Kiev is actually the Russian spelling and since Ukraine has been independent it is replaced by KYIV - translated from Ukrainian name Київ - 1996 English transliteration system Ukr Govt Legal Terminology CommIission - "The capital of Ukraine is the City of Kyiv" - article 20 Ukrainian constitution - Rugger I guess this makes you a Kyivanite - celebrate tonight with some salo and horilka........cheeers
