North Korea Warned Not to Launch Missiles

There have been many reports that North Korea has recently stepped up missile test preparations. South Korea warned North Korea today that a missile launching would invite sanctions and isolation from international communities.


STORY:
Chinese fishing vessels recently moved out of waters near a disputed sea border between the two Koreas.

The same action occurred a few days before North Korea's last missile test launching in October 2008.

And this is sending a troubling signal to South Korea.

[Yu Myung-hwan, South Korea Foreign Minister]:
"North Korea's launching missiles is a forbidden thing, so they will get various sanctions. If they take that into consideration, they understand the missile-launching will not give any benefit to North Korea."

North Korean short-range missiles have a range of about 100-150 kilometers (60-95 miles), which means they can hit all of the Seoul area and many U.S. military bases in South Korea.

Experts say the North may have hundreds of short-range missiles, and recent successful tests have proven their capability.

The U.S. military stepped up its monitoring of North Korea this week out of concern of possible missile launchings.

U.S. and South Korean news reports said the North has made further preparations to test its longest-range Taepodong-2 missile, with a launch possible in about a month.

After meeting in Seoul, the foreign ministers of South Korea and Japan said North Korea should stop its provocations.
