As with all shoulder exercises, form is key if you want to escape injury. The shoulder muscles are small and the joint complex so its easy to do damage if you jerk, bounce, or use too much range of motion. This video shows two variations of the shoulder press: alternating and simultaneous.

As with any dumbbell exercise, form is key if you want to maximize your muscle building efforts and minimize the chance of injury. Don't use too much weight, if you can't do the exercise slowly then you need to go lighter. Count aloud "one onethousand, two onethousand, three onethousand" on the way up and the way down, if you cant do this on this exercise then you are using too much weight. The reason this exercise method maximizes your muscle growth is because it confines the motion to the muscle you are trying to work out, if your body squirms, swings, and kicks, all you are doing is taking the focus away from the muscle you are trying to exercise.

Anyone can be healthier, have more energy, sleep better, and feel better about themselves through bodybuilding. Bodybuilding doesn't have to be expensive or take a lot of time, gyms are great but home workouts can save you time and money. A cheap dumbbell set from a garage sale or walmart is all it takes to get started with your home workouts.

  • Hmmmm, a couple days ago I did this exercise but I felt my back arching and I kept leaning back, that could explain why my right shoulder is sore more.

    Any advice for arching?

  • Hey Lemonade2006, back arching? First start by making sure you flex your abs to support your back while doing this. Second, you might need to use less weight till you get the hang of the balance.

  • Just hang in there, if your shoulders are getting stronger they will get bigger too. Its just that the strength gains are much easier to see/measure than the mass gains.

  • Another very important point you dont mention, is that using a palms facing inward grip often relieves pain on the shoulder, it's a less stressful movement which activates more triceps.

  • I disagree with so much of what you say, it's hard to know where to start. 'You should only train shoulders once a week and always on their won?' - says who? The key to success is finding what works best for you. I train shoulders with chest and it works great! There's also nothing wrong with bringing the weights down an inch or so below parallel, and the pause is unecessary.
